Teaching Kids God’s Heart of Love, Not Racism

We’ve been watching and waiting and trying to figure out what/how we were going to tell our kids about what is happening in our country right now. Racism is ugly and not God’s heart. I wish it wasn’t our reality, but unfortunately, it is.

The other day I was watching the news and my oldest saw and heard things I wish he hadn’t. But, I don’t want to hide it from him either…so there I was, praying God would give me the right answers.

When we talk with our kids about the hard subjects, those conversations always seem to come unexpectedly and much earlier than we would like. So, after trying my best to answer his questions, I knew I wanted some Biblical truths to teach him as his foundation, if he were to ever have questions again.

So, today I want to share with you 4 Biblical truths to teach your kids about God’s heart of love. It sounds like a strong statement, but if your child fully understands these scriptures and lives them out…when they encounter racism, they’ll immediately know God’s heart on the subject. AND they’ll be strong enough to stand up for God and others!

  1. Genesis 1:27 “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
  2. Matthew 22:39 “Love your neighbor as yourself.
  3. Philippians 2:3 “Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.
  4. 1 Peter 3:9 “Do not repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.

Talk through these scriptures with your kids, one at a time. Ask them questions like: What does this mean to you? Or, how does this differ from what you see in the world today? How can we put others above ourselves? When someone does something to hurt us, should we try and hurt them back?

With your help and the help of the Holy Spirit, they’ll begin to see that God’s heart for people…of any color…is LOVE.

We’re praying for our country with you…
