Getting Back to the Basics

Getting Back to the Basics

IT’S A NEW YEAR!!!

Welcome 2024!  Not that 2023 was terrible for me, it wasn’t, but who doesn’t love a fresh start?  A clean slate and a new goal?!  For some of you, that means you are gearing up for great things with high expectations, all ready with new goals in mind!  While some of you think you know better than to make a New Year’s Resolution, because you give up on them too quickly.  How about I meet you in the middle and say, sometimes, we just need to get back to the basics?!

Years ago, I read an article about New Year Resolutions and how they can make an impact in your life for more than just the average 3-5 weeks.  [I’m totally one of the ones who have great intentions but don’t always follow through!]  In the article, it encouraged people to try and change just one small thing in the new year.  One thing that would take a small amount of time and energy but would leave a daily change for the better.  And then it asked you to commit to it for a whole year!

If you're anything like me, your first thought was, "A whole year?!"  That's a BIG commitment, lol.  After thinking about it for a bit, I decided I was going to make our bed, every day…for a whole year, a sort of getting back to the basics for me.🙈😂  Some of you are rolling your eyes right now but don't laugh at me, lol, I needed something I saw immediate gratification from.  So, I took 1-2 minutes out of almost every day that year, and I made my bed. I did something physical where I saw a real change and it didn’t take me forever…just to remind me I could change, and new year resolutions could be awesome!  [And it stuck, I still do it almost every day!]  I say all of that to say, making a New Years Resolution is completely DOABLE!!

Here's my 2024 challenge to you…[I promise, it's completely doable AND it will be life changing!]

Let's get back to the basics in our faith.  Choose one small thing that will make a tangible difference in your walk with Christ in 2024, and then commit to it for a whole year.  If you need a little help, here are a few simple suggestions:

  1. Read your Bible!  Hebrews 4:12.   [If you’re new to reading the Bible, start in the book of John, then move on to the book of James after that!]   Maybe for you, this means starting small and reading a few verses of the Bible per day.  Chew on those verses, reread them throughout the day/week, ask God what he’s saying to you.  Allow the verses to get into your heart and help you to become more like Christ!
  2. Find a healthy, Bible teaching church and get involved. [Make a commitment to go every Sunday for a year!] Hebrews 10:24-25.  Maybe for you this means asking a friend or family member where they attend church, and then going with them!  Just start by attending every Sunday, with the goal of getting involved somewhere in the church by the end of 2024!
  3. Find someone you trust to mentor you. Titus 2:3-4. Identify someone who you trust and who is further along in their walk with Christ than you are.  [Someone who knows the Word of God, and can answer your questions as you learn.]  Ask that person if they can help you grow in your relationship with the Lord this year!  Find someone who will encourage you and point you to Jesus!

Getting back to the basics in your faith doesn't have to be overwhelming.  It has the potential to be amazing, if you'll just start by taking the first step!  I would love to hear your New Year Resolution for 2024 and I can’t wait to hear how God leads and changes you!!!  Happy New Year everyone!

Love!!  Jennifer
